Building Ordinance (Part 1)

This ordinance provides for a notice to repair or demolish such buildings deemed fire hazards, dangerous, unsanitary, or public nuisances.  Specific building conditions meeting these terms include those with rotted roofs, ceilings, floors, or foundations, windows out, untenable, and unsightly, or any combination of the above.  The building inspector will inspect the building, notify the owner, and give the owner a reasonable amount of time to comply with the ordinance.  A re-inspection will then take place.  If the owner has not complied at this stage, the city may issue a notice to demolish.  The owner has 30 days to respond to this notice, at which time the city may demolish the property and assess a privileged lien against the property until city expenses are reimbursed.  There is also a provision for a fine of up to $100 a day for every day the property owner is in violation of the ordinance.
