Munday's Flag Mural

When plans were announced to bypass the small community of Munday with a four lane highway, some believed it would be the last nail in the coffin of a dying community. Munday citizens knew better and organized a fight to not only keep their community alive, but to revitalize it. A beautification and cleanup campaign began in 2002. Organizers soon affiliated with Keep Texas Beautiful and major changes started taking place.

Citizens donated over $26,000 to purchase streetlights. Another group donated money for sculptures to be place in the proposed Centennial Park. A grant through Texas Yes made possible the purchase of flags and benches for the downtown area.

During the planning stages of the highway project, TxDOT Graphics Designer, Michael Ford, presented an idea to community leaders for an American flag mural made up of the silhouettes of Munday citizens to decorate the wall of the overpass. In July of 2004, Mr. Ford set up his camera in the Munday Fire Hall and people from Munday filed in all day to have their pictures taken. The result is a work of art unique to Munday that will stand as a landmark and a source of pride for generations to come. We appreciate Michael Ford's vision and creativity and TxDOT's commitment to artistry in the design of Texas highway projects.
